Run Faster by Walking More
Ever wondered how run walk intervals work?
Fun Fact: During a recent training run my pace with a 90 second RUN/30 second WALK was the same as a 60 second RUN/30 second WALK.
AND I was fastest on my last 2 miles and that was a 60 second RUN/45 second WALK interval.
🧐How can that be?🧐
Well, we tend to RUN at the same pace most of the time. The problem comes when we RUN at that pace for too long and our Heart ❤️ Rate gets too high. Then when our WALK break happens, we slow down way too much to try to recover. SO, that means by cutting that RUN time and increasing the WALK time, we maintain a lower Heart ❤️ Rate and our body can continue for more time.
Low Heart ❤️Rate = Better Endurance for the long haul.
This is why my athletes that previously would RUN 9:00 min and WALK 1:00 min, had a dramatic improvement in pace when I cut that RUN time.
Whether it’s hot weather training, overcoming an injury or just increasing your distance, using a run walk interval can be a fun way to train. Many of the athletes I train utilize the Galloway Method of Run Walk Run in all of their training runs.
